Streaming Audio & Conclusive Thoughts

Streaming Audio

As mentioned in the intro, the Noxon iRadio Cube offers a multitude of music sources to select from, even without wired/wireless LAN it can work as a classic FM radio, although it’s a bit pricy if you are only going to use it for that.

The most popular choice will be internet radio of course, with an up to date list of over 10.000 stations you will never have to hear the same tune again if you don’t want to. If you prefer to get the iRadio to play your collection of MP3/WMA it does require a bit more work.

You’ll need to install a UPnP server on your network in order to stream audio to the Cube. Terratec includes the same software with the Cube as with the previous iRadio: TwonkyMedia. You get a fully licensed version which allows for playback of all popular music formats. If you happen to have another device on your network which supports UPnP (XBOX360/PS3) you can stream music, videos, images to them with this same software.

The setup is quite easy really, take a look here at our review from last year, nothing much has changed since then. You point to software to where you music is stored on your PC, and that’s basically it, TwonkyMedia will index your music and read the ID3 information to allow you to sift through your collection from the iRadio Cube based on artist, genre, album, … or just plain folder browsing.

Conclusive Thoughts

Terratec has tweaked the classic iRadio to bring you are more capable, yet more compact device. The Cube adds some much desired extra functionalities, the alarm clock is brilliant, while the FM input (and antenna) makes sure you can revert back to the classic radio if you want.

This product can well be the sleeper hit of the winter holiday season. Terratec has done their best to improve on their product, the Noxon iRadio Cube has a mid-range price of about €150-200, so it’s still quite an investment, for that price a line-in for your portable MP3 player (be it iPod or other device) would make it more interesting still.

Overall for the price you get a high end compact media playback device which offers an excellent variety of streaming music sources, and with all the included goodies, software bundle, discount offers and online support it will entertain you for years to come.

We thank TerraTec for the opportunity to test their iRadio, thank you for reading, happy holidays and until next time!
