Intel Core i7 920 and 965 XE CPU Review

CPU by piotke @ 2008-11-03

In a few weeks you can find a brand new Intel CPU at your local hardware shop, it still carries the Core name but it is drastically different compared to their previous Core 2 units. The Core i7 has an onboard memory controller and hyperthreading is re-introduced. We compare the performance of the entry level 920 model as well as the high end 965 XE.

Benchmarks SingleCore

SuperPi 1M and 8M

The Core i7 is clearly the winner. A careful reader might spot something that seems to be an error in the results. The E8600 is performing a lot better compared to the QX9770, while it has only 133 MHz more in raw speed. This is because the Maximus II Formula has a Bios that is boosting SuperPi scores for Wolfdale processors. But has no influence on the other results.

Hexus PiFast

Although the difference is less than 3 seconds, the i7 920 is slower than the E8600. But keep in mind that there a 667 MHz speed gap between those two. So it's keeping up pretty well.
At the same speed (QX9770 and i7 965) there is almost a 10% benefit in favor of the Core i7.

Cinebench R10 Single CPU

Cinebench can be used for benching single core and multi core. Here below you can find the single core results. I haven't really mentioned it yet before, but also here we can see the AMD Phenom trailing behind with quite a gap....
