In-Depth LCD Buying Guide - What Monitor Should I Buy?

Others/Miscelleneous by rutar @ 2008-03-14

Before the LCD displays arrived, the choice of a monitor has been fairly easy. With CRTs you had screen size, refresh rates and price and you could be fairly sure that you did not have to worry about anything more. With LCDs, it is a different matter and this guide aims at helping you understand what the marketing gibberish means and what you really need to look for.

Features

Features

This is usually an area that is infested with marketing buzzwords but there are 4 types of features you really need to consider before buying.

Adjustments (height, swivel, tilt)

Madshrimps (c)

Height adjustment is very important to maintain an ergonomic working position, the others are nice to have but you can skip them. A lot of the TN monitors which need height adjustment the most due to the viewing angles don’t have it but if you are a gamer this might be a sacrifice you need to make.

Pivot

Madshrimps (c)

This means the ability to turn the monitor 90° to view things in portrait view. Some people need it and others find it a waste so you have to consider your usage pattern. It is very useful if you read or/and write a lot of documents or edit pictures in portrait format. The bigger the display is the better this function becomes because otherwise text becomes too small and I would only think about it with a 24” or bigger monitor.

1:1 Pixel mapping

It means the ability to display any resolution as native with black bars around it. This is especially important for gamers that want to run at a lower resolution to get more FPS or those who play older games that don’t support 16:10 format. TN products often don’t support this.

Inputs and HDCP support

Madshrimps (c)

Of course more is better but you have to consider your usage pattern. Think of the devices you want to connect (including future purchases), then eliminate the monitors that cannot suit your needs (switching plugs can be very annoying). If you want to connect HDCP devices you will need support for that.

I think I discovered one more thing that is 100% true for LCDs:

Just as with cars, it is better to buy a model that has been in production for 6-12 months than one that has just been released. That way the bugs are worked out and the production line knows how to make the product properly. Be aware that the distribution can easily add a 6 months delay!

Rule of the thumb is: Buy only after the product has been out for 12 months in your country.
