Intel SkullTrail Super High End PC Platform Review

CPU by massman @ 2008-03-11

How do you define the ultimate gaming system? Is it the best price/performance system or just the system with the most power, regardless of the cost? Intel´s answer goes by the name of SkullTrail, which gives you the opportunity of using two high-end processors and two high-end video cards in one system. Today we´ll take a look at what Intel is offering in terms of performance compared to a regular high-end system.

Futuremark benchmark suite

Futuremarks tests

These synthetic 3D benchmarks from Futuremark allow you to evaluate the expected performance of a system with different generations of games. As each 3DMark uses different features and quality settings, it allows you to get an idea of how your system will perform.

3DMark03

3DMark03 is known to be very GPU dependant. The faster the video card, the higher the score, regardless of the CPU speed. The benchmark is in no way scaling better with more cores, in fact, these scores could easily be produced with an E8500 clocked at 3G as well.

As we can see, not much of a difference here, both the QX9775's and the QX9650 perform pretty much the same.

3DMark05

Unlike the 03 version, 3DMark05 is far more CPU dependant. However, more cores do not mean more power as this bench is this single threaded. Pure CPU speed counts.

No real big differences here between the single and dual processor setup.

3DMark06

This is the newest version of the 3DMark06 series, prepared for multi-cpu power play. The more cores, the better, which you'll notice in the test results.

When looking at the main scores, we indeed see the major difference. Let's have a look at the detailed results.
