Intel SkullTrail Super High End PC Platform Review

CPU by massman @ 2008-03-11

How do you define the ultimate gaming system? Is it the best price/performance system or just the system with the most power, regardless of the cost? Intel´s answer goes by the name of SkullTrail, which gives you the opportunity of using two high-end processors and two high-end video cards in one system. Today we´ll take a look at what Intel is offering in terms of performance compared to a regular high-end system.

Bios explored

Bios:

When booting the SkullTrail setup for the first time and tapping the DEL-button to change some settings in the bios, I first noticed that this board is an evaluation version as the bios image clearly says "Alpha evaluation version". What does this mean? I'm not sure, but it didn't make me very enthusiastic about overclocking this system. Alpha evaluation mostly means: working but not entirely perfect, or to put it in [M]-words: do NOT overclock. That, however didn't prevent us from trying (which you'll read further on in the review).

Let's have a look at the most important bios options.

2xQX9775 cpu's working perfect at an FSB of 400.

Not that many settings, just the very basic options.

Madshrimps (c)

All bios settings at highest values. Don't be afraid, these settings are not applied settings. Notice the bad calculation of the bios speed. After changing a few values, we managed to get this speed:

Madshrimps (c)

This shows how good the alpha evaluation version really is.

Everything set at best values (highest for voltage, lowest for timings). Again, very basic, not at all ideal for tweakers.
