Sparkle 8800GTS 512MB Review: G92 Madness Continues

The G92 based Geforce 8800GT was a very exciting product, unfortunately NVIDIA was short of supply and lower priced ATI HD3850 & HD3870 gained a lot of popularity this way. The higher-end market still remained untouched; to fill up this gap NVIDIA came up with a second wave of 8800GTS video cards. With the GT in mind, could we be dealing with yet another great NVIDIA product? We find out.

  • The Intel E6600 was being overclocked to 3GHz by changing the FSB from 266MHz to 333MHz and by keeping the multiplier at default (9). This way the CPU would score on par with the Intel E6850 based on the popular G0 stepping.
  • Teamgroup's pair of 1Gb DDR2 sticks were clocked to default settings via the NVIDIA 650i chipset.

  • While Windows Vista is now officially launched, we decided to test with a mature Windows OS (XP SP2).

    Benchmark methodology

    The game benchmarks were completed with the Club3D HD3870 512MB, the Sparkle GeForce 8800GTS 320MB, the XFX Fatal1ty Geforce 8800GTS 320MB, the Sparkle 8800GT 512MB and the Sparkle 8800GTS 512MB at stock speeds. All tests were done with a 20” LCD monitor with a maximum resolution of 1600*1200, where 4AA and 16AF offered the best in-game graphics we found that AA disabled didn't decrease the eye-candy that much while the frame rate now actually become more acceptable for the 8800GTS. The in-game settings were always maxed out.

    With our following performance charts you will be informed at all time at what IQ settings were being used. FRAPS was used to measure the FPS during repeated manual run-troughs of a certain part of the games tested, the minimum, maximum and average values were recorded.
