Software, Power and Conclusive Thoughts

Software Setup

TerraTec includes a full version of TwonkyMusic UPNP media server, there’s also a Mac equivalent called EyeConnect which we did not test.

For starters you can access the NOXON iRadio over your local network through a web browser, the integrated web server shows the device status (connection status, firmware date/version) and you can add/remove favorites prepare the unit for a firmware update.

If all you plan to do with the iRadio is play Internet Radio you are good to go and the device will work wonderfully, we were able to find local radio’s which we normally listened to with the old “classic” radio, as well as cool USA’s based Jazz stations, adding presets is easy and a computer illiterate person can operate the iRadio without trouble, for them, it’s like a radio with 2500+ nicely categorized stations, no more FM tuning!

If you ambitions are to play music you have on your PC, you’ll need to read the manual for a bit longer, in there the installation process of the TwonkyMusic software is detailed step by step, very complete and easy to follow.

After only a few moments we had the server up and running and part of our music database added:

Don’t let the multitude of options scare you, most likely you’ll only ever change the “content” sub-page, in here you configure where your music is stored; depending on your media you can either list all the directories, or in our case we used the Winamp music database, this worked better and quicker compared to using the build-in file scanner.

Power Usage

We used a Kill-o-Watt meter to measure how much the NOXON iRadio consumed when plugged into the wall socket. When turned off the power adapter consumed ~4Watt, powered on, with music playing at maximum volume level: ~6Watt. Very encouraging numbers, and definitely cheaper than using a full blown HTPC if all you want is play music :-)

Conclusive Thoughts

We had a good 3 weeks of daily usage with the NOXON iRadio, overall the experience was very positive, there were a few snags here and there worth mentioning, but they didn’t spoil the fun:

  • Powering on the device is possible with the classic (power on) button, alternative you hit one of the preset buttons and it will turn on also and start playing immediately, however you need to hit the preset button twice before it works.
  • When the device loses its connection (WLAN gone, internet down) the time before “timed out” is way too long, so the device “hangs” for a long period where you can’t do nothing but manually power cycle.
  • Switching quickly between different presets and songs can also hang the front display, the music will still play, but you can no longer use the remote to change volume or skip to the next song/other station; the power off button on the device does still function though.

As you can see, these are the only minor glitches we found, and most of them seem to be solvable by a firmware update (or less hectically pushing the buttons). The NOXON iRadio is a smart media player which simply works, streaming free internet radio using WLAN or Wired network is its key selling point and it excels here, the ability to play back media from your PCs is the icing on the cake.

The setup process is not overly complicated, the included manual is very beginner friendly and a computer illiterate person will be able to use this device without much struggling; as long as he reads the manual.

At a price of ~€179 it’s not the cheapest small media player on the market, but its features are unique, while a portable MP3 player and speaker docking station will offer you similar playback feature for a lower price, the streaming audio over wired/wireless network is unique for the iRadio.

The biggest competition for the NOXON iRadio will be this device:

Especially older generations will have to be convinced to ditch their trusty AM/FM radio in favor of a internet enabled version, younger generations who rarely use AM/FM radio will find this latest TerraTec product quite innovative, allowing them to enjoy the nostalgic radio news in the morning, mixed with podcasts and streaming of their favorite music, over their wireless network.

As it stands, we recommend the NOXON iRadio for the younger generation mainstream:

Vista detects this device on the network and will allow you to stream audio from your Vista to the machine, plug and play!
