OCZ 2GB PC6400 Special Ops Edition Urban Elite

OCZ 2GB PC6400 Special Ops Edition Urban Elite

The PC6400 "Urban Elite" is the second OCZ kit we're having a look at, and as you can see, the nature and look of the modules is clear from the first view :

Specifications

The full name of the kit we're reviewing today is the OCZ PC6400 "Special Ops Edition" (SOE) "Urban Elite". Quite a mouthful and the memory is as such a part of the "special edition" section of OCZ ram. OCZ has been bringing out a lot of new memory lineups lately, like the nVidia and ATI certified modules, and some other Special Ops memory kits as well... This "Urban Elite" version is positioned at the top of the "Special Ops" mini lineup.

Now if you've got all those lines of memory a bit confused by now, don't worry: you are not alone! OCZ has been diversifying their existing memory line-ups as well lately with several sub branches, so much so actually, that it becomes difficult sometimes to see the trees through the forest... Especially for novice buyers, things can get a little confused: OCZ has so many PC6400 parts out there, many of which have a lot of similar specifications. Among all the PC6400 parts, these do look promising however :

  • 800MHz DDR2
  • EPP 4-4-3-15 (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)
  • 240pin DIMM
  • Parity : Unbuffered
  • Special edition XTC Heat spreader
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • Operating voltage : 1.9-2.1 Volts
  • EVP (Extended Voltage Protection) : 2.2V ±5%
  • OCZ's Enhanced Latency Technology
  • Memory size : 2x 1024Mb

    Look and Feel

This is OCZ's PR on the Urban Elite kit:

Serious gamers put heavy bandwidth requirements on their memory, and put a premium on both superior performance and dependability. Featuring ultra-low 4-4-3 timings, the new OCZ Special Ops Edition (SOE) Urban Elite is ultimate balance of speed, reliability, and high capacity, making them an ideal solution for gamers. This new line of limited edition OCZ memory features a distinctive urban camouflage motif heatspreader and a price tag that has an edge over competitors. SOE Urban Elite 2GB (2x1024MB) dual channel kits are the ultimate memory upgrade for the latest graphic-intensive PC games, such as Battlefield 2, Half Life 2, Doom 3, and Quake 4, which deliver the best end-user experience with 2GB+ of memory.

All Special Ops Edition modules are 100% hand-tested for quality assurance and compatibility and feature high quality XTC (Xtreme Thermal Convection) heatspreaders for the most effective heat dissipation. Furthermore, each OCZ SOE module is backed by the industry leading OCZ Lifetime Warranty and technical support for unparalleled peace of mind.

    Let's have a closer now:

As the PC8500 platinum kit we just looked at, these modules are also equipped with the "XTC" heatspreaders. Only the colours differ a little... The heat spreader design is of course what makes these modules stand out and what gives them their name : they have a "camouflage" drawing on the metal of the heat spreader, and the difference between the Urban Elites and the "normal" Special Ops Edition is the color : in this case its almost black, whereas the Special Ops is more greenish. The name of the kit hints to the many "battlefield like" FPS (first person shooter) games out there. The look as well as the name of the kit surely brings over the "made for gaming" message, which is the whole point of course...

So glad to see the #1 spot goes to cheap ram. Far too much importance has been placed on C21 @ 1,000 jigga watts for only $699. That's an 8800 AND your ram rec...

I understand the ram needs to hit a set speed, but 1200mhz just isn't necessary to enjoy a game, encode a light speed, browse the web, etc. Perhaps this upsets the .001% who throw gobs of $$ to see their bar graphs rise 1/4" over us n00bs, eh?

*raises $109 G.Skill 2x1GB HZ that lives around stock speeds up high*

    Cheers!

    Great roundup.

Maybe you can add these in the next part: Team Xtreem Dark 2GB DDR2 800MHz CL 4-4-4-12 It's cheap, around €100 and it has been reported to hit 1200 Mhz.

That's pretty good memory. Would be cool if you guys could bench those sticks.

    Nevertheless, very nice article. Cheers!
