Aircooling @ the MAX, Performance & Silence Tested

Cases & PSU/Cases by terangreal @ 2003-03-18

Looking for the ultimate aircooling ? Want to push more then 1.85v through that Athlon XP core and still have headroom for overclocking? Or looking for a very silent solution to keep it all cool and safe?
Look no further, we test ThermalRight?s SLK900U and compare it to its older brother the SLK800. And for reference we also include the popular Alpha PAL8045 and the Swiftech 462-A!

Conclusion

Conclusion:

In the end we would have to go for the Prince Cookies, Chocolate coated. But to be honest we would be tempted too hard to eat our own heatsink and the retention system is far from perfect. So in the meanwhile we have come up with the following conclusion on these less then tasty heatsinks you see on your right (although the PAL8045 does smell nice):

Madshrimps (c)

Seriously now. If you're an overclocking kinda guy and you're still using your good ole Alpha or Swiftech heatsink, go for the Thermalright goodie. A difference of 3 degrees can be the difference between constant reboots, or running that killer rig primestable. We do know that the SLK900-U is suitable to use with a 92mm fan, but we decided to use exactly the same setup for all heatsinks in this test. Later on, we'll add another article - comparing the SLK800 with a high performance 80mm with the SLK900-U cooled by a 92mm high performance fan, the way they're meant to be used.

In the end, considering the tests we have performed here, I would recommend the SLK800.
No compatibility problems plus a lower price then it's bigger brother, this is the way to go ... for now.

Any ideas, suggestions, comments or additions concerning this article are always welcome -- @ this thread in the forums!
