Aircooling @ the MAX, Performance & Silence Tested

Cases & PSU/Cases by terangreal @ 2003-03-18

Looking for the ultimate aircooling ? Want to push more then 1.85v through that Athlon XP core and still have headroom for overclocking? Or looking for a very silent solution to keep it all cool and safe?
Look no further, we test ThermalRight?s SLK900U and compare it to its older brother the SLK800. And for reference we also include the popular Alpha PAL8045 and the Swiftech 462-A!

SLK900-U

SLK900-U:

Ow goodie - another Thermalright box :). SLK900-U this time, fitting both AMD and Intel PIV cpu's. Just two pictures to show that Thermalright makes sure nothing happens to this valuable equipment during transport. After unpacking it, anything can happen tho.

Be sure not to throw the plastic film away, which is lying on top of the package! You'll need it later on.

And the prize for the most shiny item in the package goes to: the SLK900-U (that's right, in all it's glory). This orange cutie weighs about 570g. You can see that one of the adjustments Thermalright made to the design was to mount it with screws, using the holes around the socket in stead of the clips. The base remained the same as was used for the SLK800, and the number of fins is still at 34. Then what's so different here? Thermalright added the option to place a 92mm fan on top. But, together with adding this new feature, they rotated the fins 90°. Here comes our compatibility problem again. Where the SLK800 didn't require any modification to some mainboards whatsoever, the SLK900 does.
The official list by Thermalright about (in)compatible mainboards can be found here.

Ow yeah, they know how to lap by now.

Flimsy fins, watch out not to bend any while setting it up.

Here you can see the thin plastic film, to prevent short-circuiting the mainboard.

X-shaped backplate. But the point of this picture is actually in the next one:

4 of these are holding the backplate on its place. The thing is - be careful with those tiny spacers. Since the SLK900-U(niversal) is designed for the PIV as well, Thermalright delivers different spacers for each type of processor. To make sure you're using the right ones, read this official install guide.

Same thing as the SLK800: mounting fan with clips. Both the SLK800 and SLK900 have different anker holes for those clips, so these are the same clips for all fan sizes.
