Aircooling @ the MAX, Performance & Silence Tested

Cases & PSU/Cases by terangreal @ 2003-03-18

Looking for the ultimate aircooling ? Want to push more then 1.85v through that Athlon XP core and still have headroom for overclocking? Or looking for a very silent solution to keep it all cool and safe?
Look no further, we test ThermalRight?s SLK900U and compare it to its older brother the SLK800. And for reference we also include the popular Alpha PAL8045 and the Swiftech 462-A!

PAL8045

PAL8045:

Madshrimps (c)

Alpha released the PAL8045 on 09 october 2001, about 10 months later then Swiftech showed us the MC462. Available in two versions, the PAL8045T came without 80mm fan and the PAL8045U was delivered with fan and thermal grease (to be precise, the 80mm was a Delta AFB0812SH-F00, producing a CFM of 46.1 at 40dBA). Due to its generally equal cooling results, but lower price when compared with the MC462, this heatsink went straight number one in the "hitlist" after its release.

Nice black anodized finish this time: a massive copper body with an embedded coper core. This heatsink weighs about 520g, not a real lightweight either. Similar to the MC462, the PAL8045 has to be mounted with screws.
A detailed install guide can be found here.

Madshrimps (c)

The PAL8045 is one of the few heatsinks that cools better when the air is being sucked away from it, so the fan must be facing upwards (but watch out if you're using a high performance fan type: it can badly injure you).
And yet another similarity to the Swiftech: placing of the condensators can give installation problems.
