Geforce 8800 GTS 320Mb Review - Does 640Mb matter?

Videocards/VGA Reviews by geoffrey @ 2007-02-12

With the introduction of the Geforce 8800 GTS NVIDIA made available an affordable high end DX10 video card, now they´ve slashed its memory in half, reduced the price, to make it even better deal. Can the new GTS keep up with its memory-loaded brother? We find out.

Sparkle 8800GTS 640Mb: Inside the box

Madshrimps (c)

A well designed box, but unfortunately nothing too fancy inside:

Madshrimps (c)

  • Sparkle GEFORCE 8800GTS 640Mb
  • DVI -> VGA connector
  • 4-pin molex -> 6-pin PCIe power cable
  • HDTV cable
  • S-Video cable
  • Driver CD and manual

    There aren’t many extras in this box, no games or goodies, while this makes the bundle appear quite sober, if it reduces cost and focuses on providing affordable fast video cards, it can only be a good thing for budget-wise enthusiasts.

    Specifications

  • NVIDIA 90nm G80 core
    - core clock: 500MHz
    - shader clock: 1200MHz
  • Hynix 640Mb (10x64Mb) GDDR3 with 320 bit interface
    - memory clock: 1600MHz
  • active heatpipe cooler, dual slot solution
  • Dual Link DVI
  • Integrated HDTV decoder
  • TV-out
  • SLI ready
  • PCI-Express 16x
  • Dimentions: 23cm x 11cm

    Rivatuner monitoring showed us the real GPU core clock was @ 513MHz, while the memory is clocked @ 792MHz (1584MHz DDR). The 8800 GTS cards are noticeably smaller than the high end GTX version, so no compatibility issues are to be expected, do keep in mind that you have a large(r) case

    going right after [H] last stronghold with those graphs done with THE SAME SETTINGS, evil evil geoffrey

    I would like even more graphs of the AA tests because that's what matters not the number.

    300$ for a 320mb 8800GTS is tempting. Well worth considering although I'd prefer to wait for ATI's R600 cards. If those fit in my case, that is

    Although it's a nice article there are a few spelling errors. Namely in the specs table here:
    http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=get...&articID=5 43

    Frequency is spelled in three different ways of which only one is the correct one.
