Athlon Low-end Tbred B Overclocking

CPU by jmke @ 2003-03-05

Want to upgrade your Athlon Thunderbird? Take a look at latest XP1700+ & XP1800+ samples from the AMD farm, sporting a thoroughbred core and lots of overclocking potential. Can the older Abit KR7A tame this CPU ?

Increasing the cpu-clock to 1929Mhz gives you a speed boost of 15-30% in most games.
Going all the way and reaching 2192Mhz delivers free performance ranging from 20-50% depending on the Game/Application.

Conclusion:

As you can see in the results above, they don't lie, you get a nice increase by altering some settings in your BIOS. What's more if you just increase your FSB to 175 you will see an increase in performance ranging from 5-10%! The thoroughbred core is almost at its life's end, but it will go out with a flash! The Barton has yet to show up in large quantities at the local hardware shop, and pure price/performance it doesn't even come near the low-end Tbred's.

If you are looking for an upgrade and don't mind spending that little extra on cooling, you can have a killer-system for a budget price! Call your local hardware store to see which CORES they have in stock!

I bought mine from Debcom (link) and they verified the presence of the JIUHB text on the CPU before sending it to me!
