Thermalright Ultra-120 CPU Cooler Review

Cooling/CPU Cooling by jmke @ 2006-10-03

This huge heatsink from Thermalright with 120mm fan support fits both AMD K8, AM2 and Intel S775 system, in this review we compare it against the best out to see if Thermalright can reclaim the CPU air cooling crown. Read on to find out if they have succeeded.

Closer & Installation

The Ultra-120 is quite heavy, mainly due to the series of aluminum fins which are very tightly packed, making this heatsink an ideal candidate to combine with fast spinning fans.

From this angle the heatsink doesn?t seem to be that big, it?s actually quite thin and this helps to make it compatible with all motherboards out there so far.

Installation

For installation on AMD S939 you need the material pictured above; due to its weight the Ultra-120 requires screws, a simple clip-on (like with the Ultra-90) won?t provide a secure fit.

This restricts the orientation of the Ultra-120 to the CPU socket line-up, in my case on the DFI NF3 motherboard it?s not pointing in the ?optimal? direction (towards the back of the case).

Between the fan and the heatsink you place 2 strips of rubber to help reduce vibration noise, this method was also used on their XP series of the heatsinks.

Onto our test setup ->
