ATI designed their RD580 (Xpress3200) to be compatible with DDR1 and DDR2, this latest offerings from MSI for AMD AM2 puts one of these bad boys on their Platinum series of motherboards. Let?s find out how it handles when we overclock it to the limit.

Exploring the BIOS


At first boot up you are greeted by a new MSI logo, which looks quite good:

What tweaking options do you get with MSI RD580 board? The HTT can be adjusted by 1mhz increments from 200 to 400Mhz

CPU voltage can be increased in two ways, first by adjusting the voltage increment from 0.8v-1.4v

Second way is by setting a percentage increase, this can be set up to 23,3%

There is support for DDR2 speed of 400/533/667/800

The voltage to the DDR2 can be adjusted from 1.8v to 2.3v

Several memory timings options can be changed in the BIOS, although the control is nowhere near that of boards like the DFI lanparty series.

An important memory setting is the Command Rate, this can have quite an impact on performance, default it’s at 2T.
