Battle of the Mobile CPUs: Core Duo vs Pentium M

CPU by piotke @ 2006-06-22

The Pentium Mobile line of processors has become quite popular with hardware enthusiasts as they offer a better performance per Mhz than their desktop companions. We compare Intel?s Core Duo for mobiles to their Pentium M, overclocking them on a desktop system they go head to head.

When it comes to these synthetic benchmarks, the Dothan doesn't stand a chance against the Yonah. The results are that high because the Yonah is dual core, where the Dothan isn't. The same goes for the memory bandwidth. The much higher clocked DDR2 delivers much more bandwidth. But when it comes to calculating, let's say SuperPI, are the results the same?

Where are the days when we overclocked our Athlon XP processors with sub zero cooling and extreme voltages, just to see a below 40 seconds score? The Yonah is capable of delivering a time <30 seconds with default settings. when squeezing 2.6 ghz out of the dothan, we can hardly match that result.
