Battle of the Mobile CPUs: Core Duo vs Pentium M

CPU by piotke @ 2006-06-22

The Pentium Mobile line of processors has become quite popular with hardware enthusiasts as they offer a better performance per Mhz than their desktop companions. We compare Intel?s Core Duo for mobiles to their Pentium M, overclocking them on a desktop system they go head to head.

    Test configurations

Both CPUs are quite overclock friendly and their default clocks speed is nowhere near their maximum limit. With air cooling they can be overclocked easily as the Yonah reached 3.2Ghz and was completely stable. We must admit though that we were lucky with the Yonah (Core Duo) as most units have a FSB wall, they simply refuse to work past a certain FSB no matter how much vcore you provide. Only with extreme cooling you can hope to get a bit higher.

So here are the test configurations for each platform

    Dothan @ 1.73Ghz
    CPU Settings: 13*133 (default speed)
    Memory Settings: 133 - 2,5 3 3 6
    CPU voltage: 1,35 Vcore

    Dothan @ 2.6Ghz
    CPU Settings: 13*200
    Memory Settings: 200 - 2,5 3 3 6
    CPU voltage: 1,45 Vcore

    Yonah @ 2.16Ghz
    CPU Settings: 13*166 (default speed)
    Memory Settings: 276 - 5 5 5 10
    CPU voltage: 1,4 Vcore

    Yonah @ 2.6Ghz
    CPU Settings: 13*200
    Memory Settings: 333 - 5 5 5 10
    CPU voltage: 1,4 Vcore

    Yonah @ 3.2Ghz
    CPU Settings: 13*245
    Memory Settings: 408 - 5 5 5 10
    CPU voltage: 1,6 Vcore
