Double Damage - 2-in-1 Case Mod

Modding/Case Mods by Bernd @ 2006-02-20

What?s better than one PC? Two of course! When Bernd decided to build a dual CPU system he took a rather unique approach. Rather than strapping 2 CPU?s to one motherboard or using one of the latest Dual Core offerings from AMD/Intel he has been working on a case which can house 2 systems nicely, with good cooling and easy functionality through one keyboard/mouse and monitor.

Day 3: HDD rack

Day 3

The hard drive rack assembly is very similar to the optical drive version; I start of by cutting more plates from the old PC case

Time to bring out the bug spray

So after two hours of cutting and sawing I have 8 plates for 2 HDD racks

The first series of mounting holes I made with a small drive and then I used a Dremel to cut it out, but as you can see in the photo below it’s not quite straight

My second attempt worked out better, I marked the places where I had to drill and the result is much better

A series of L shaped metal pieces will help keep things together

A few holes for the rivets

And it’s done! It went a lot smoother compared to the DVD rack assembly, practice makes perfect

And this is the end results; it may seem that rack deforms when a hard drive is screwed tight into place, but it’s less extreme than the picture makes you believe

I repeated the whole process and ended up with two HDD racks which can hold up to 4 drives; I’m only using 3 hard drives for the moment, so there’s still room for a future upgrade
