Double Damage - 2-in-1 Case Mod

Modding/Case Mods by Bernd @ 2006-02-20

What?s better than one PC? Two of course! When Bernd decided to build a dual CPU system he took a rather unique approach. Rather than strapping 2 CPU?s to one motherboard or using one of the latest Dual Core offerings from AMD/Intel he has been working on a case which can house 2 systems nicely, with good cooling and easy functionality through one keyboard/mouse and monitor.

Day 1: Motherboard panels

Day 1

I started this mod by was visiting the local PC graveyard, where I salvaged an old PC, unfortunately it wasn’t ATX so the amount of material I can reuse is limited. The case cover was the first thing I put aside for this casemod:

Next up was the CPU which came installed in this old PC, an AMD DX4-100Mhz, I won’t be using it for its computing power…

The old power supply I completely took apart, I kept the fan and the power connector. In the photo below you can see the original power connector on the left, the one on the right I modded a bit with my Dremel. It’ll be using these connections to be able to hook up the power supplies of the Double Damage rigs from the inside

It’s amazing how many jumpers are put on these old motherboards, I counted more than 50! My current PC only has like 5

Now it’s finally time for the real work, I started by making a motherboard panel, some multiplex wood is cut up into this shape:

Next I marked the positions of the motherboard stand offs and installed them:

I used wire insulation, custom screws and bolts to increase the height of the stand offs, they are now ~15mm from the back plate

Here’s how it looks with the motherboard installed:

Because I’m using a rather heavy graphics card I had to build extra support, the old AT case comes in handy ones again, I removed a small bracket from its back side and mounted it onto my custom motherboard panel

The screws I used were a bit too short so I had to sink them into the panel, after a bit of measuring and tweaking it turned out the way I wanted:

My graphics card fits perfectly:

Since I’m housing 2 systems I made 2 motherboard panels, identical to one another:

Now that I had a working motherboard back plate I could already use my gaming system and relax a bit. The temporary case in use might not win a beauty contest, but it’s working:
