HEC WinPower 550 - Compucase Power Supply Review

Cases & PSU/Power Supplies by SidneyWong @ 2006-03-07

We have heard of Herolchi HEC power supply before. Heorlchi was a division of Compucase. This time, the HEC logo is once again called for active duty. Today we are checking out their new 550 watts ATX Power Supply cooled by a single 120mm fan.

Thought & Conclusion

Conclusion:

The quality and performance of PC power supply have improved greatly in the last two years, unlike a few years back. I always say there are many brands to choose from and there are not many power supply manufacturers. Regardless, it is customer service and product support that really count in the decision making process. Fierce competition is weeding out the weak performers.

Note:

The WinPower 550 is performing as good as the Seasonic S-12 which I believe it is one of the top choices in terms of performance and price; it is behind in efficiency factor which is gaining attention for some users in certain market segment.

Mr. Adrian Lin from Compucase advised me that they made engineering change to both the fan grill as of late 2005 and the 8-pin (4+4) connector as of last July, and they sent me the photos below. My review sample came from production prior to the changes.

Although the WinPower lacks modular cables, trim pots and a tad low on the 12 volt rail at least from my review sample, MSRP for WinPower 550 is reasonably set at about US$85 and you know it will be lower if you shop around. You can find E-retailers carrying HEC products here. WinPower 550 is one that you may consider seriously on your next purchase with its price and rich features in mind.

PRO
The standard size will fit any case
Single lighted 120mm for the low noise and appearance conscious audience
Sleeved cables
SLI ready
Meet both Intel and AMD current and next generation requirements
Steady voltage delivery on all rails
Reasonably priced

CON
Painted finish can be scratched easily
No fan speed sensor
Possible Power Socket placement interference
Power factor not in the elite group

I like to thank Mr. Tun Wong for sending me the review sample and I wish the new HEC line a successful launch with customer service and support to meet the demanding market.
