Sunbeamtech NUUO 550 Watts Power Supply Review

Cases & PSU/Power Supplies by SidneyWong @ 2005-09-14

Once again, SunbeamTech is expanding its product line. This time is "Power Supply" here we come. Back about 8 months ago, Sunbeam product development staffs were inquiring perspective product reviewers from varies sites for the ideal power supply inputs. In a few months time, we are now looking at Sunbeam?s NUUO series power supply in a package that could very well meet enthusiasts? high demand.

Indeed, NUUO is quite a unique power supply. It differs from the rest of so many. The question remains; is this all for marketing? Here is my take.

With so many PC power supply "players", some have been around for a long time and others are new comers. More new players are coming out as demand increases (demand from enthusiasts) making the purchase decision an uneasy task. This is compounded by the fact that the 2-pound weight ~$15 power supplies fill the eBay bargain pages. To distinguish yourself from the competitors, you have to give them more than what they ask for; NUUO may well be taking this path.

At the end of the day, I have to ask myself if I need all the stuffs NUUO provides. SLI ready is a must for gamers; Sleeved wiring is a must for any high end unit; Modular connector/cable is good; 120mm fan is a welcome; Second 80mm fan is an overkill; Fan controller (for one of the two fans) on top of auto sensor is pure marketing I could do without; Temp reading inside a PSU is similar to trying to find out what your neighbors are talking about you daily. The very tight voltage from all three rails is key what NUUO is for.

I do find a way to make better use of the Fan Controller and temp reading (just one as stated before) by taking one of the unused temp probe from my SF-609 and have this installed as CPU temp monitor; or how about giving up the controller in exchange for voltage trim pots?

In the past several months, I have had the opportunity to take on several product reviews from Sunbeamtech; without hesitation I'd say Sunbeamtech is expanding from a single category product line into multiple lines in short order. However, there is not much mention or focus on product warranty. In addition, I have received a couple of emails regarding the lack of customer service support in the U.S. Perhaps, Sunbeam may re-visit this very important issue and take some corrective actions in becoming more successful.

Overall, I am satisfied with this power supply for what it provides: solid voltage. Secondly, the highly competitive price point of ~US $80. I can't stop myself from recommending NUUO.

  • Solid performance
  • Excellent price to performance ratio
  • Nice finish (look)
  • Modular cable system
  • Sleeved cables
  • Auto fan control
  • SLI ready
  • Enough power connectors for the very serious
  • Enough power for most if not all

  • The Fan Controller mounting and/or its usefulness
  • No adjustable trim pots
  • PFC for EU market only

Again, many thanks to Kevin for his continuous support in making this review possible.
