G.Skill DDR Memory Roundup: 7 Extreme Kits Tested!

Memory by MarkElmer @ 2005-08-04

Welcome to our little endeavor to try and sort through the massive DDR1 line-up of the new upcoming enthusiast memory company, G.Skill. We will take a closer look at 7 Dual Channel kits from the Extreme Series and test their overclockability.

The PC4400LE is the most famous product of G.Skill. With this kit they had their breakthrough in the European market. Even at the beginning when local stores were not yet selling their products, it was possible to buy it directly from G.Skill. These kits seem to perform very well, and the most of them will reach DDR600 speeds. We’ll find out later on if the kit they send us is capable of that too.

While G.Skill prefers using 2.7-2.9 volt, we noticed that a higher vdimm like 3.0-3.1 volt, can give a little boost to this memory,

We had two sets of the G.Skill PC4400LE to test with, both with Samsung TCCD-437 chips on board.

This new product from G.Skill differs itself in two ways from the usual TCCD-kits. The first one is the use of heat spreaders, although they look nice, they don't seem to feel that expensive. We would like to see the more massive heat spreaders, like they use at OCZ and Mushkin.

The other difference is that G.Skill does not only use TCCD-chips on these modules but also TCC5. These chips will replace the older TCCD, but luckily are not considered to be inferior to the TCCD-chips.

Which type of chips have been applied to our modules is not for sure It could well be TCC5, because by disabling the Command per clock cycle, these modules responded less extreme to it than the older TCCD-modules.

The price of a 1 GB kit PC4400FC is approximately $190.
