Transcend PC2-4200 DDR2 Overclocking Madness

Memory by KeithSuppe @ 2005-08-17

Once again we test the limits of Transcend DDR2 533, this time in 1024MB (x2) module size. If you recall, overclocking DDR SDRAM resulted in higher frequencies when smaller 256MB modules were used. Fortunately DDR2 doesn?t seem to be bootstrapped in the same manner. Transcend memory has been keeping pace in performance with some of the more costly modules out there and for much less money. Their current DDR2-533MHz modules are based on Elipida E5108AE-5C-E IC?s and they?ve simply been spectacular.

Benchmarks/Conclusion

Benchmarks

  • SiSoftware Sandra
  • Everest Home Edition 2.01 Lavalys
  • SuperPi Mod v.1.4
  • PCMark04
  • PCMark05

  • 3DMark2001SE
  • HardwareOC Far Cry Benchmark
  • Doom 3 Timedemo1 benchmark

CPUBench2003 may seem somewhat dated as a benchmark, however; the program not only has one of the most extensive set of memory benchmarks, it cleverly allows you to add your results so that a constant and current database can be maintained. For example in the screenshot below which displays one of five subsets of benchmarks CPUBench2003 draws from it's admittedly dated archive "nForce2 2xDDR333" as a comparative value. Above this, however; "Unknown" is displayed which represents a past unrecorded result.

I wasn't sure about keeping this benchmark in my repertoire as it's rarely used among hardware review sites that seemed to have simply overlooked it. I consider this benchmark suite to be one of the most extensive available for freeware, and will continue using it until the powers that be voice they're concerns.

    Conclusion

Undoubtedly Transcend offers us quality memory for some of the most competitive prices. In testing Transcend's 1GB DDR2-533MHz TS128MLQ64V5J $114 (shipped from Transcend) I've come to the conclusion these may be the best value available if your looking to populate your board with 2048MB of memory. Given the fact these puppies overclocked to 747Mhz just like butta I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

With 2048MB of RAM your system will do just about everything a little smoother and there should be a marked improvement in some applications. Once again Transcend has given us a solid product for a budget price and once again it performed far beyond my expectations, in fact we couldn't reach this memory's performance ceiling given our system limitations. This is true Overclocker's memory but for the fact it eschews fancy heat spreaders, lights, brand name and of course the marketing. What they do offer is smashing performance with a lifetime warrantee. I'd like to thank Amanda and Transcend for allowing us to test this product.
