Back to the basics - modding that dull grey Box with a twist

Modding/Case Mods by jmke @ 2004-10-05

See how an ugly dull box turns into one spectacular looking case, guest writer Antonio shows of his creation: sandblasted side panels, professional painting and near unbreakable windows are some of the excellent features of this "big black" casemod.

Right & Front Panel

I needed some inspiration on what to do with such a large side panel… after a few hours thinking (and drinking) it came to me in a vision. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, so why not use something from the movies? I got some action figures from Star Wars lying around (don't ask) and my eye fell on the logo which is located on the left shoulder pad of Bobba Fett. I learned it's called a Mandalorian logo... so with a clear idea of what to do it's time to go to work.

I drew a mirror image on the inside of the right side panel:

And then plugged in my Dremel for the hard work... and here's the result:

Q: The cut-out of the MANDALORIAN is simply stunning, did you do it all in one sitting?

Yes, all in one go. I first tried a jigsaw but this was too hard and the plate kept slamming up and down. So I took out my Dremel and after 5 hours of hard work at the expense of
32 cut-off wheels: Voila, one MANDALORIAN LOGO

Now onto the front panel:

I needed a blowhole at the front so I drilled a nice 76mm hole and with the aid of drainpipe made a duct

Shoot! I almost forgot that I had a sliding door that comes down to reveal the top CD/DVD drives:

So, that finishes the front cut-outs!

An Acryl Panel of 1mm thickness should be strong enough.

... , I needed a 1cm thick plate...
good info on how the paintjob was done and everything but little error in the review there

would not call it a review
but fixed the anomality, thanks for pointing it out, hope the layout & text is clear; took me quite some time to do everything.

Very nicely done.

No side panel fan, makes my day.

Don't get your point - that's a good hand held drill with over 12 volt battery pack. Of course, a drill press may be more impressive, but so are CNC, BMC machines which are unnecessary for the task at hand.

It was just a joke . I was referring to the fact that it was standing there w/o anybody holding it.
I know, my jokes suck

Didn't get your sense of humor for a few seconds.

The invisible man.
