Xice ExternalCool EC900 Water Cooling Kit

Cooling/Water Cooling by evangeliz @ 2004-07-22

If you like to hear yourself think when sitting next to your PC, then Xice has a solution for you; the EC900 is a completely passive water cooling kit. Today the Madshrimps install this kit into a small barebone system to see how it will cool down a 2.4ghz P4 system!

Intro

When I pushed the ON button of my CHYANG FUN SFF for the first time, I almost cried of the noise that came out of that small box. So I started looking for a solution to make it quieter, I put the fans on 7V but the 40mm fans still made a horrible noise.

Then I thought, hey why not try water cooling? Due to the limited size of the cube, it would be very difficult and I was really amazed to see some guys actually pull it of. But since I wanted to have some breathing room inside the cube I looked further into prefab external WC kits. I discovered a company named XICE who produce several silent cooling solutions!

One of them is a completely passive water cooling kit, so I contacted XICE to get more info, they pointed me to Tom at www.factor.be who was kind enough to provide me the EC900 Limited edition (silver) for Intel/Socket 478. A few days later a box arrived at my doorstep. I opened the box and found a neatly packed EC900.

I was rather surprised when I saw that the radiator was black as I thought it would have been silver due to the “Silver” remark on the box.

What you get:
  • PCI bracket for the tubing and a molex to fire up the device at same time as the PC and also to give it power.
  • 2m of 8/6mm tubing
  • a tube of AS ceramique which is pretty nice for a pre-made unit.
  • a German manual (Luckily you can find an English version on their website)
  • a water block with a separate manual and clips.

It was then that the “silver” remark becomes clear as the water block is not made of copper. Installation of the water block is straight forward on Intel if you follow the manual.
