AMD Athlon 64 heatsink roundup

Cooling/CPU Cooling by piotke @ 2004-01-18

Very few people have an AMD Athlon 64, but recently AMD introduced the A64 3000+ for a reasonable price. I couldn't resist and bought me one. Time to put some custom HSF units under some fresh A64 load!

Heatsink

  • Material: Aluminium
  • Weight: Not mentioned
  • Dimensions: 77×68×40 mm (l × w × h)

    Fan

  • Fan Size: 70x15mm
  • Speed: 4200 RPM +/-10%
  • Airflow: 33.8 CFM
  • Noise: 31.8 dB-A

    In the package I found:

  • The heatsink + fan
  • Extra retention frame and backing plate.
  • Small tube of Thermal paste.

This one has a similar design as the boxed cooler. But there are some differences. This fan spins about 1000 rpm faster, but isn't actually louder. More but smaller fan blades seem to be the key to this.
Overall this is a simple design, but compared to the boxed cooler very well finished.

Installation went very smooth, I needed less pressure to install the cooler, but will this turn into an disadvantage ? Carry on reading.
