Aopen 300Watt PSU - The Modded Version

Cases & PSU/Power Supplies by piotke @ 2003-12-08

Last week I got a call from a friend. His PSU was too loud, so I planned to do something about it.
I went to the local hardware shop, and they pointed me towards an Aopen 300Watt PSU. (FSP300-60PN) Sounds like an ordinary PSU ? Take a look at what I got !

Modding / Installation

Modding - surprise

The most special part of this PSU, is not that it's cooled by an ordinary 120 mm fan, but by a clear bladed fan. This in combination with three leds makes this PSU special.

I found this out by surprise. :) In the shop they showed me the PSU, 120 mm fan, blablabla, whatever..., had to buy a PSU anyways. Came home, turned it on, by "wire tricking" the PSU, and looky here, light comes out of this PSU.

Installation (problems)

It definitely looks nice, but I have some considerations about this. I tried to place the PSU into a standard ATX case. The cheapo-style cases. It didn't fit!
I tried to mount it with the fan pointed towards the CPU.

  • Problem numero uno: The screws did not match the holes. Crap!
  • Problem numero duo: Because the fan sticking out 2 mm, the PSU was not 100% balanced on the rails, where the older and louder PSU was.

Then I turned the PSU upside down, and wow, the screws fitted perfectly, and the PSU had a decent positioning.
But I think this is not the best way to place this PSU. Because the fan is now close to the top panel of the case (less than 1 cm space), there is not a good airflow to cool the unit. You also can't see the fan anymore; witch means bye bye fancy effect.
There is still coming some light out of the PSU, through the back of it, but that's of course not the same effect. Unfortunately.
