Audio/Others by nobraine @ 2003-11-21

VIA?s Envy24HT-S chip is powering some new soundcards out there, we take a look at its features and see how it performs when put it up against a Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 / SoundBlaster Live 5.1 and nVidia's Soundstorm.

Hearing Test & Conclusion

Hearing Test:

The hearing tests are not that objective because, as a member of the loud music generation, my hearing isn't that optimal anymore, but as far as my ears don't deceive me, I liked the sound quality of my Soundstorm chip the most, it sounds a bit fuller. While the Fortissimo III 7.1 and the Entertainer 7.1 DSP are somewhat equal in clarity, although the Fortissimo III 7.1 has a nicer bass. The difference between the newer sound chips and the SoundBlaster Live 5.1 is clearly noticeable.

Conclusion

I must say both cards are very nice pieces of technology, but in the benches performed here, the Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 took the top spot. But the cards come close, so in the end it's more a choice of features, what card fits your needs the best. As the Entertainer 7.1 DSP has both S/PDIF in and out it could prove a more wanted choice.
