AXLE RADEON HD 5450 512MB GDDR3 Video Card Review

Videocards/VGA Reviews by stefan @ 2010-07-02

The RADEON HD 5450 from AXLE is a passively cooled video card with a very precise purpose: to be used in a single or multi-monitor setup for 2D applications or watching High Definition movies. The 3D performance is low, can be compared to the 4550 and it is not recommended for the latest games, but the card is passively cooled and should make for a nice HTPC component.

A Closer Look

The GPU is cooled with a big heatsink that covers almost all the PCB surface:

On one of the laterals, we can find the AXLE logo, embossed:

There are no power connectors on the PCB ending, thanks to the very low power consumption:

The D-SUB connector can be disconnected from the cards’ PCB, if we decide to buy from a computer store (if available) a low profile bracket:

Here is also a view from the video cards’ lateral:

On the back of the pcb, we can see two of the memory chips, a sticker and the screws that keep the top heatsink fixed on the GPU:

The memory chips are made by Qimonda and have the 1DSH1G-04A1F1C-16G model number; there are a total of 4 chips on the board, each holding 128MB:

The screws that help fix the frontal heatsink have a spring on them and a protective ring to avoid scratching the PCB surface; however, on the PCB is drawn the model of a little backplate that should be there and it actually is present on the OEM version from AMD; AXLE has decided that it is not really necessary to include it:

On the bracket, we can find a D-SUB, HDMI and DVI connector:
