TRENDnet High Speed PC and Mac Share Cable (TU2-PMLINK) Review

Others/Networking Gear by stefan @ 2010-05-26

TRENDnet have developed a device which makes data transfer between 2 PCs, a PC and a Mac or 2 Macs very easy. We simply have to connect the cable to both computers, start the included file manager application and that´s about it! Let´s look a bit more in-depth at this data transfer cable, in the following review.

The Data Transfer Program

When we connect either side of the cable to one of the computers, we are welcomed by an Autorun:

When the Autorun is executed, the following intro screen appears:

After the ShareLink program is started, we get to see a normal File Manager application, which shows us the file structure of our current computer:

To be able to transfer the files to and from another computer, we have to connect the other side of the cable to the second PC. On that PC, the ShareLink program will request to launch, like on the first computer. If on both computers the utility is started, the screen will split in two and will show in the upper part the remote computer file system and on the bottom the local host file system. We can organize these windows how we desire. In this file manager we can perform all kinds of file manager operations (ex. copy, move) between the 2 computers file systems:

When a transfer is being made, for each file we get to see the total transfer time, the name of the current file transferred and the percent total completed:

When I first plugged in the cable to a computer that had the USB connector a little dirty, I have encountered an error, and the transfer was being made very slow. When I have switched to another connector, everything went smooth:
