AMD 6 Core 1090T CPU Overclocked with LN2 and Benchmarked

CPU by leeghoofd @ 2010-05-19

This was one of the most eagerly awaited releases at the latest CeBIT show 2010. Sadly for the Shrimps reviewers we didn´t see much Thuban or GTX 480 in real life at the fare. But now finally AMD´s new core is amongst us. AMD released 2 brand new CPUs: the 6 core 1055T model running at 2.8Ghz and the flagship the 1090T version at 3.2Ghz with unlocked multiplier. Time to explore how it performs compared to the older 4-core as well as Intel i7 competition.

Conclusion

Conclusive Thoughts

Seems I'm getting more and more hooked up with AMD cpu's lately. With thanks to Hwbot.org, OCN.net and co competitions. I'm really starting to fall for the charms of the AMD line-up. One of the major things is the great CPU power for the buck. Being very easy to overclock and cool down compared to e.g. an I7. Plus they are an absolute joy under LN2, due to the absence of a cold boot and cold bug. This Thuban 1090T is no exception to the above rules either. Out of the box performance, with Turbo Core enabled is more than fast enough for the mainstream and even high end power user.

By adding a beefier cooler, 4-4.2ghz hexacore action is just as easy as ABC. AMD has been improving their production process. Most of their latest C3 revisions, tend to clock better and better on air and water-cooling. Which is very good news for the PC users that aren't shy of a little bios fiddling to obtain some extra speed.

Move over Deneb and Callisto and co, there's a new kid in town

I already tested this Thuban sample, which we got straight from AMD, on the 890GX and FX platform. Tests with the older 790FX is foreseen for the near future. This mainly cause most motherboard manufacturers still need to iron out a few bugs to warrant 100% compatibility. Most flaws are due the Turbo Core implementation. And the bios engineers' main focus is of course on the new 890XX series, to max out the new architecture. So it will take some time to get their act together...

In case you are looking for an upgrade of your PC, don't overlook AMD's latest offerings. These Thuban CPU's are very excellent bang for the buck. The 1055T, a 6 core 2800mhz version (3.2Ghz with TBC on) is retailing for less than 190 euro. The Black Edition 1090T runs at 3200Mhz ( 3.6Ghz with TBC activated) is available around 280 euro. The Black editions have got the same unlocked multiplier advantage, as Intel's Extreme series CPU's. Bundle these CPU's with the brand new 890 Series motherboards and you got more than enough power at hand than most apps can handle...

I wish to thank Steeve Bourdon from AMD for allowing us to test their latest products, Milan Rado from Asus for the 890FX Crosshair IV board and Dimastech for the bench table, this setup has served me well over the past months, expect a closer look at this bench table in the very near future.
