Scythe Mini Kaze 50mm Fans Review

Cooling/VGA & Other Cooling by stefan @ 2010-05-26

The Mini Kaze 50 mm from Scythe is a perfect choice for adding a bit of airflow in those hard to reach places, without impact the noise level. They can be used as extra chipset fans, replacement for external HDD case fans, or a replacement fans for small ITX cases.

Inside the box

The Scythe Mini-Kaze fans come in a little transparent plastic box; the fan stays fixed in a cardboard frame, to avoid damages during transport. Also on the frontal part we can see the word ‘silent’, which tells us that these fans should have a very silent operation and on the bottom we find out that inside the box there is also a 2-pin to 3-pin adapter:

On the back of the box, we can see the fan technical specifications, in 6 different languages:

Here is what we can find inside the box:

  • the fan with a 2-pin connector
  • the 2-pin to 3-pin adapter
  • 4 mounting screws

The fan has only two wires, which tells us that if we connect it to a motherboard header, we won’t be able to read its speed; on its back we can see its full code name, the Scythe logo in the center and its rating which is DC12V, 0.06A:

Here is a closer view on the fan connector:

On the frontal part of the fan we can see that it is completely black and there is no other sticker in the center; the fan has 7 blades and its frame is very thin:

Any word on the noise generated by these fans? I've been looking for a small, quiet fan to drop on top of my NB heatsink to try and bring its temp down (my CPU is water cooled, so it doesn't get much airflow and idles around 55C).

If they tested these fans in the same test room as their 120mm fans, it seems their 26dBA readings places it between a 1200rpm and 1600rpm 120MM fan
