BIOSTAR Z790 VALKYRIE LGA1700 Motherboard Review

Motherboards/Intel LGA1700 by stefan @ 2022-12-25

While the Z790 VALKYRIE motherboard from BIOSTAR gets sometimes lower scores in benchmarks versus the EVGA Z690 CLASSIFIED which has a more mature UEFI, it compensates by having better expansion options (3 full-sized PCIe slots, no less than five M.2 for storage, individually detachable heatsinks, but also quite a bit of headers). It incorporates a 20-phase design, shielded slots, a lot of headers for fans and USB ports but also a debug LED display for signaling errors.

A Closer Look Part IV

The antenna ports are also available here:

The secondary M.2 is linked to the CPU, while the third is linked to the chipset. M2M_CPU2 does support 2280/22110 PCIe 4.0 x4 SSDs, same can be said about M2M_SB1:

The fourth M2M_SB2 does come with the same support for 2280 drives, while the last M2M_SB3 does incorporate 2242/2260/2280 support, it comes with PCIe 3.0 x4 support in terms of standards and here we can install both NVMe and SATA drives. When using a SATA SSD on the M2M_SB3 slot, the SATA_8 connector will be disabled, while when using a NVMe drive on the M2M_CPU1 slot, the secondary PCIe 5.0 x16 slot will be disabled:

The SuperIO chip on this board is IT8625E:

On the I/O, we will find a Smart BIOS Update button, a HDMI 2.1 port, a DisplayPort 1.4, a Smart BIOS USB port (USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A), a secondary USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A port, another USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A pair of ports, an USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C with compatibility for DP 1.2, an USB 3.2 Gen2x2 Type-C port, two more USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A ports, the audio jacks including Optical S/PDIF port, two WiFi antenna ports but also a 2.5Gbit LAN port:

On the back side of the PCB, we did note a large backplate, to enforce the board even further:
