PowerColor Red Dragon Radeon RX 5600XT Video Card Review

Videocards/VGA Reviews by stefan @ 2020-05-07

With the RX 5600XT Red Dragon, PowerColor have demonstrated that it is possible to use a proven, 2-fan cooling system which occupies only two slots in order to cool the GPU properly, but also run the memory at a higher frequency of 1750MHz. Even if the Base clock is set lower than the XFX card, in Boost we are seeing about the same maximum frequency and this fact basically explains why the Red Dragon wins in most performance tests.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

In this article, we will concentrate our attention upon another RX 5600 XT video card for the midrange segment, but this time manufactured by PowerColor. Without boring you with the same technical details we have described in the XFX Radeon RX 5600 XT THICC III Ultra article, we will get right to the point regarding operating frequencies:

-with the XFX, the Base clock of the GPU is set at 1660MHz, with a Boost clock of 1750MHz, while the memory is set at 1500MHz

-the PowerColor Red Dragon RX 5600 XT does run at lower Base clock (1560MHz), with a Boost reported at 1620MHz, but the memory is clocked much higher at 1750MHz!

As expected, the card is featuring 36 CUs, translating into 2304 SPs, 144 Texture Units, 64 ROPs, while the memory bus has been shrinked from 256-bit we have found with the RX 5700 series to 192-bit. The total memory quantity is 6GB, matching most requirements for games up to 1440P resolutions at medium to high settings in order to achieve playable framerates and not to start caching to system RAM. The card was mostly designed for FHD displays, where you can run games at maximum details, while obtaining high FPS.

In terms of packaging, we are seeing a similar design as on the previous RX 5700 video card we have tested from the same Red Dragon series. Besides some product features represented as logos on the frontal cover, PowerColor does also highlight that this card comes with a 14Gbps memory clock:

On the back, we will note the product features listed in more detail, together with the minimum system requirements:

After removing the top packaging layer, we will end up with another plain cardboard enclosure:

The inside contents are protected with lots of foam material:

The card is also wrapped inside an anti-static bag, for extra measure:

PowerColor is offering to the user an installation guide as well, for customers that have not worked with such products in the past:

The RX 5600 XT Red Dragon features a simple, but efficient cooling system, which is hidden inside a two-slot design, with a black plastic shroud. Thanks to the compact nature of the board, it should fit in most computer cases:

The Red Dragon series employs dual 100mm fans for more coverage and efficiency during low operating speeds; the fans do incorporate two-ball bearings, with longevity of over four times over the regular models. The left side fan does also incorporate a Red Dragon logo:

The right fan is identical, only the middle sticker is changed, with a PowerColor logo this time:

A more subtle Dragon logo is also present on the black plastic shroud:
