BIOSTAR A10N-8800E Motherboard Review

Motherboards/IntegratedCPU by stefan @ 2019-03-14

After installing a DDR4 memory kit, some storage (NVMe preferably since it does take less space and no cables are required), we can enjoy quite a bit of performance in a small package, the main point of attraction being the AMD R7 Graphics inside. While the CPU side does not have a lot of single-core performance, applications that need multiple threads of execution perform better on this particular SoC, allowing multimedia applications to run at decent levels. When acquiring this particular board, keep in mind that you also need to provide a good airflow, otherwise the fan will produce quite a bit of noise, even after it has been calibrated.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Besides mini-PCs, we at MadShrimps do really enjoy testing out tiny boards with integrated CPUs; solutions from AMD are even more interesting because the iGPU is most of the time more powerful than the Intel counterparts. BIOSTAR has recently built a board based on AMD Carrizo (AMD FX-8800P Processor) that was considered top-tier from this series back in 2015 and contains two Excavator CPU modules (4 integer and 2 FP units counted as 4 compute cores). The SoC does also include a Radeon R7 iGPU with 8 compute cores (512 shaders), support for DDR4-2133MHz and a video engine (includes UVD6 with hardware HEVC decoding).

The product is shipped inside a medium-sized cardboard enclosure, featuring the new BIOSTAR design:

Some of the product highlights are explained on the back:

After lifting the box cover, we will unveil the multiple compartments inside that hold the mainboard, along with its bundle:

Regarding the bundle, we can remind of the Installation Guide, the disk with drivers and documentation, two SATA cables but also one I/O shield:

The manual does explain the necessary steps in order to get everything started:

An in-depth explanation of the board components is also available here:

The board is further protected inside with an anti-static bag:

A10N-8800E board comes with a black PCB, while the PCI-E slot and the memory slots are colored yellow; there is enough space between the components, but we must assure decent ventilation if the board will be installed inside a case. The M.2 Key M 16Gb/s slot does support different size PCI-E & SATA SSDs:
