Mad Catz R.A.T. 6+ Optical Gaming Mouse Review

Others/Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2019-01-03

R.A.T. 6 has been recently reincarnated into the R.A.T. 6+ and features a very similar chassis, but an upgraded optical sensor (Pixart PMW3360). The Thumb Barrel adds an extra analog control layer, while the back cover can be adjusted as necessary in order to permit different grip types. Let’s not forget about the weight system (3x6G weights are pre-installed), that can be removed easily and the aluminum chassis that reinforces the build.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

The Mad Catz brand is finally back on the market with some interesting, refreshed models of the older mice we did really enjoy quite a bit. In this article we will take a look at the R.A.T. 6+ model, featuring a Pixart PMW3360 optical sensor (also used by the SteelSeries Rival 700, CM MasterMouse Pro L, Creative Siege M04 and more). This sensor model is known as being very reliable, and is not custom programmed as we have seen with other manufacturers (that often change the name of the sensor as well because of this aspect). On a side note, the original R.A.T. 6 did come with a Pixart ADNS 9800 laser sensor and tracked up to 8200DPI.

The product is shipped inside a small cardboard enclosure with a plastic window, so we can have a look at the mouse even without unsealing the box:

On one of the box sides, we will learn that we are dealing with two color schemes of the R.A.T. 6+, white and black:

Some of the product technical specifications are available on the opposite side of the packaging:

The product is explained with more details in the back, including the lighting that is named “Chameleon” (the old models have had “Kameleon” RGB lighting):

After unsealing the box, we will get to see that the mouse is kept secure inside a semi-transparent plastic mold, while the documentation is held in a separate plastic bag:

Besides the Quick Start Guide, the bag did also include a nice set of Mad Catz stickers and a “Technical Support” and Warranty Information leaflet:

The guide allows the user to explore the hardware customization options of the mouse:

While the R.A.T. 6 was offered in a black color with red accents and a bit of white, the design of the 6+ is simpler, containing only white accents on the all-black chassis:

Besides the rubberized scroll wheel and the Thumb Barrel, there are no other rubber layers on this mouse; in the middle area we do have an RGB logo present:

The back cover can be adjusted as necessary, in order to use the mouse with multiple grip types:
