Ballistix Tactical Tracer RGB DDR4-2666 2x8GB Kit Review

Memory by stefan @ 2018-11-05

The new Ballistix Tactical Tracer RGB do not disappoint by offering good performance and quite a bit of overclocking headroom; these are available with multiple speed ratings and 8GB/16GB densities per module. The LED lighting system is configurable in very much detail and we have the option to leave it run without the light bar for maximum LED brightness. The temperature sensors are a nice feature to have as well, that has been preserved from the previous generations.

Packaging, A Closer Look

Micron was one of the first manufacturers that introduced multicolored memory module lighting back in the day, with their Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2 RAM kits. The feature was quite unique, showing module load depending on the running application and also featured temperature probes on their PCB. The Tracer series was back in DDR3 form (more elaborated, LEDs covering the entire length of the module) and now Micron has made available the more advanced DDR4 series including a light bar.

These particular modules can ship in single or dual channel configurations; our samples have shipped as two separate 8GB modules, each with its own packaging:

The plastic enclosure does show the Ballistix branding, memory quantity, rated voltage and speed, but also reminds us that we are dealing with a Tracer RGB offering:

On the back side, we can observe some of the main product highlights, the product code name, serial number but also links to some online resources:

The modules can be found in a separate transparent plastic enclosure, after removing the top packaging layer:

The Tracer kits take part of the Tactical series and feature gunmetal heatspreaders on both sides:

The aluminum sinks do feature a military look and on the top area we can observe two removable, black plastic pins for uninstalling the light bar; the white Ballistix logo is also presented in the middle:

The opposite heatspreader does include some additional stickers, with some internal code names, but also the technical stuff:

Micron did not forget to include the product code name, rated speed, CAS timings, manufacturing country but also the presence of Intel XMP for an easy setup:

The top plastic light bar does include another, black Ballistix logo in the middle; this one can be removed for maximum RGB LED brightness or can be replaced with our own 3D printed model:
