Silicon Power Diamond D30S 2TB USB 3.1 HDD Review

Instead of going with a Toshiba or Seagate branded HDD as we have seen with the previous models, this time Silicon Power has included a Western Digital WDC WD20NPVZ-00WFZT0 (WD Blue Mobile) drive, which features an 8MB cache and a 5400 rotational speed. This particular model does feature NoTouch Ramp Load Technology, so the recording head never touches the disk media, ensuring less wear to the recording head but also better protection during transit. Additionally, Silicon Power has included a slim and elegant chassis with it that is IPX4 waterproof and scratch resistant thanks to the rhombus surface pattern on the top cover; on the top we do also have a LED included which signals the transfer mode along with the power status.

Packaging, A Closer Look

In this article we will look upon another external storage device from Silicon Power, that incorporates a stylish casing and is available in two different formats:

-D3S with capacities of 500GB/1TB/2TB

-D3L with capacities of 2TB/3TB/4TB/5TB

The D3S drive is powered by a 2.5’’ drive and has a thickness of 10.4mm, and as you have probably guessed, the D3L does house a 3.5’’ drive, its total thickness becoming almost double at 21.1 mm. Our sample is the more portable D3S with a total capacity of 2TB and was shipped inside a cardboard/transparent plastic enclosure. Right on the front, the manufacturer does show the supported hardware bus, along with some of the main product highlights:

On one of the box sides, we can check out some multimedia storage approximations, depending on the available space:

On the back side, we will be able to observe a small product description, along with the technical product specifications; here we will also learn of the SP Widget free software which can be downloaded from the Silicon Power website, along with the package contents list and supported operating systems:

After removing the top cardboard layer, we will end up with the internal transparent plastic mold, but also the User Manual:

Inside the supplied manual, we will be able to see the correct installation procedure, along with some online resources, also in multiple languages:

As we have seen with other external rugged USB 3.0/3.1 storage devices, the Diamond D30 model also comes with full-sized USB connectors on both sides of the cable:
