Crucial BX300 240GB SSD Review

Storage/SSD by stefan @ 2017-10-14

With the BX300, Micron has succeeded to bring to the market an affordable mainstream SSD that is able to deliver sustained performance (unlike TLC-based counterparts) and also uses DRAM cache in order to obtain a speed boost. The Silicon Motion SM2258 comes in a 323-ball TFBGA package and is a 4-channel controller; it comes with quite a bit of data protection and reliability features, while the drive is accompanied by a 3-year limited warranty.

Packaging, A Closer Look

Micron has recently launched a new SSD series, which does follow the previous BX200 TLC NAND model; BX300 does now come with in-house 256Gbit 32-layer 3D MLC and is available in capacities from 120GB up to 480GB. Regarding the controller, we again have a Silicon Motion solution as on the BX100 and BX200, which needs DRAM cache to function. We are quite happy to see a MLC implementation again since with TLC the overall performance did drop quite a bit in sustained workloads, after the SLC cache filled up.

The product is shipped inside a small cardboard enclosure, similar to the one we have seen along Micron’s previous models; the manufacturer also notes on the top cover the total capacity of the model we are reviewing:

On the bottom area of the box, we will be welcomed by the list of box contents, but also a web link for checking out more resources:

After unsealing the box and lifting the top cover, we will get to see the main product sitting in the middle, but secured inside a custom plastic mold:

Besides the SSD, we will also receive as a bundle one 7mm to 9.5mm spacer, for even more compatibility options:

As documentation, Micron does include an installation leaflet, but also an Acronis True Image HD software activation key, which simplifies moving data from older HDDs/SSDs to the new BX300:

The BX300 SSD does feature an aluminum casing, with a large sticker on top:

The bottom area does feature a smaller informational sticker, that lists the product power rating, storage capacity, the factory flashed firmware version, some internal serial numbers, but also the SATA version the product was designed for:
