The N4810 High-Value 4-bay NAS from Thecus does feature low-power consumption thanks to the Intel Celeron N3160 Quad-Core SoC and comes equipped with 4GB of RAM DDR3L. The RAM is expandable to 8GB, we do have a frontal display with buttons for easy access, plenty of USB ports for connecting extra storage and/or printers, HDMI output with support up to 4K and can also perform 4K playback thanks to the hardware decoding capabilities of the SoC.
ThecusOS 7.0 does run on the N4810 server and while the GUI is not as nice looking and easy to use to the ones we have found with some competitors, it gets the job done after it has been correctly configured. Besides the usual applications for backups, hosting websites, email services and so on, we can also work with media-center oriented applications such as Plex or KODI. KODI is running on the HDMI interface, and had no issues running our video test files; VLC is also running on the same interface, but we have seen that we got lots of warnings regarding missing codecs. If you need to browse the Internet without using a computer, you can always make use of the pre-installed Mozilla Firefox browser, which loads the websites quite quickly. As a suggestion for the future Local Display additions, we would recommend having an Office suite available such as Libre Office, but also a secondary or third choice of Internet browser such as Chrome or Opera; the interface would have been even more interesting with the addition of the Popcorn Time Community Edition application.
The Thecus N4810 4-bay NAS is available online for about 416 Euros, a value which should be considered affordable for home users too.
