ASUSTOR AS1004T 4-bay NAS Review

Storage/NAS by stefan @ 2015-11-22

AS1004T NAS takes part of the latest ASUSTOR server series meant for home use, which does sport a Marvell ARMADA-385 1GHz Dual-Core processor, is paired with just 512MB of RAM and can house up to four drives. The chassis has been completely redesigned and in order to access the drives, we will have to completely remove the cover; unlike the previous NASes we have tested from the same company, this unit lacks trays and only 3.5’’ drives are supported for installation. Because of the utilized ARMADA-385 SoC, the overall power consumption is very low, while the four bays are cooled by a single 120mm fan located in the back. We can connect more devices to the NAS, but be aware that only two extra USB ports (3.0) are available with the server.

Because of the ARMADA-385 SoC, the overall power consumption is very low, while the four bays are cooled by a single 120mm fan located in the back. We can connect more devices to the NAS without issues, but be aware that only two extra USB ports (3.0) are available with the unit.

We have spotted an IR sensor place holder in the frontal area of the AS1004T, which tells us that ASUSTOR is willing to improve on this chassis and possibly provide more powerful solutions on the long run. The 512MB of available memory is not expandable, so we won’t recommend running multiple applications at once on the AS1004T.

Regarding the system performance, we were quite impressed by the read/write speeds in normal use, but the performance is taking quite a hit when using encrypted folders, as it can be seen from the test results.

The product is running the latest ADM 2.5.1 version, which is really a breeze to use and the initial setup procedure can be also ran from mobile devices, thanks to the AiMaster application.

While the more expensive ASUSTOR NAS units which support HDMI can run PopcornTime for watching the latest TV Shows and Movies in a very simple manner, the AS1004T model can handle multimedia content playback via LooksGood and Plex applications which are a breeze to install and use.

The 4-bay ASUSTOR AS1004T NAS can be found online for about 296 Euros.
