Fractal Design Node 202 Enclosure Review

Cases & PSU/Cases by leeghoofd @ 2015-08-13

One of Fractal Design's highlights at Computex 2015 was for sure the enclosure we are taking a closer look at in this review: the Node 202, a small footprint chassis, combining sleek and the typical Fractal looks. Nevertheless the dimensions, this Node 202 provides the option to install a high end gaming graphics card, thus making it ideal to serve as a HTPC media PC and/or gaming rig, this while blending in perfectly with other multimedia peripherals in your living room. The Node 202 is available in two versions, one with and one without the Fractal Design Integra 450W power supply. Fractal Design was so kind to send us the high end model with the PSU. Time to open the box and explore what this Node 202 can mean for you.

A Closer Look Contd.

The front side has the mandatory audio-in and out jacks as two USB 3.0 ports. A small touch of class is added by the Fractal team as they swapped the standard blue plastic with a black USB 3.0 version.

The two chamber design could only be made possible by relocating the graphics card via a PCIe riser system. Instead of using a flex riser cable Fractal opted for a more durable design in the form of a two piece secured riser. One part is plugged straight into the available motherboard PCIe slot and then secured via 3 screws to the housing support bracket. Talking about a bullet proof solution ! A small extender is then plugged in the previous mentioned riser to expand the width. A nice and clean solution that is well designed and effective.

Storage wise not much to mention as the Node 202 only allows two 2.5" inch HDDs ore SSD's to be installed. Maybe this is one of the bigger shortcomings of the Node 202; the storage capacity is quite limited by the provided solution. The drives are fixed to a small cage which than can be secured to the middle reinforcement bracket of the case.

Our review sample included the brand new Fractal Integra SFX format 450W 80Plus®Bronze power supply. This particular PSU is tailor-made for the Node 202 enclosure. All the cables have been adjusted for an almost perfect fit thus simplifying the installation big time.

Here are the specifications on the tiny Integra 450W PSU:

  • 80Plus®Bronze certified
  • Fully Haswell C6/7 compliant
  • 80mm temperature controlled fan
  • Maximum operating temperature at full load: 50°C
  • Taiwanese capacitors
  • OPP / OVP / UVP / SCP / OCP Protection
  • MBTF: 100.000 hours of life expectancy
  • SFX 3.3 PSU & ErP 2013 specification compliance
  • 3 years warranty
  • Dimensions (WxHxD): 125 x 64 x 100mm

The 450W just contains only the essential connectors for the Node 202, being: ATX 24-Pin (20+4) (300mm length), ATX 12V 8-Pin (4+4) (400mm length), 2 x SATA connectors and 2 x PCI-E 8-pin (6+2).
