Fractal Design Kelvin S36 360mm Liquid Cooler Review

Cooling/CPU Cooling by leeghoofd @ 2015-05-19

Swedish Fractal Design already revealed its upcoming Kelvin CPU water cooling series way back at CeBIT 2014 in Hannover. At last year's Computex we saw the same prototypes again, scheduled for a summer release. Finally in December 2014 the retail versions popped up; Fractal Design added three AIO models to their Kelvin AIO line-up: a 120mm radiator T12 Kelvin, the S24 being the 240 radiator version and the flagship S36 as the triple fan version. Today we have a look at the latter version, the Kelvin S36. The AIO market is already pretty saturated with versions from Antec, Corsair, Cooler Master, Enermax and Swiftech. What makes this Fractal Design S36 stand out from the crowd? Time to explore the Sweed's high end product.

A Closer Look Part I

The Kelvin pump/block unit is made out of a copper base for maximum heat transfer and a plastic top to reduce the costs; no fancy LEDs included here. The Alphacool ceramic bearing pump is custom tuned for maximum RPM (2400 RPM) providing a more optimal balance between performance and noise level. This in comparison with the previous pump design from the as being used witrh the Cooler Master Eisberg (3600 RPM). Also designed by Alphacool and labelled as a powerful yet also a very noisy unit. So it seems this issue has been counteracted by the Alphacool and the Fractal engineers by opting for a more balanced pump design/speed. The aesthetics remain pretty basic, yet sleek looking.

The 8/11mm tubing is securely attached to the swiveling fittings. Comparing it to one of the popular Corsair Hydro units, the H80i, one spots the Kelvin pump unit is slightly taller. The tubing size is comparable, with the advantage for the Kelvin S36 that it is interchangeable and very flexible. As mentioned before you can pimp this new AIO unit to match your favorite color scheme, by adding other fluids and different types of tubing.

Below a quick photo comparison versus the previous Alphacool/Cooler Master Eisberg project. In comparison to the Eisberg pump unit, the dimensions of the Fractal Design Kelvin remain way more modest. The copper base plate looks similar, alike the tubing and fittings. We expect great numbers from the huge 360 surface of the radiator of the  Fractal Design Kelvin S36. Some more pictures of the Alphacool pumps, the CoolerMaster Eisberg 120L Prestige on the left and the Fractal Kelvin S36 on the right; it's clear they are related.
