Synology DS415play NAS Review

Storage/NAS by stefan @ 2015-01-11

Synology presents itself with another high-quality NAS model, the DS415Play which is oriented to home users with plenty of multimedia content for playback on different devices. Thanks to the Intel solution, unsupported file formats will be converted for different devices on-the fly so they will be played without additional issues. The 1.6GHz dual-core processor is paired with a total of 1GB DDR3 (non-upgradable) and the manufacturer is still using the proven 4-bay plastic chassis which we have seen with the DS412+.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

With the release of the DS415play, Synology proposes another solution based on Intels’ Evansport 1.6GHz CPU, featuring Floating-Point units, which gives it a lot of potential when processing multimedia content. The product is shipped inside a simple cardboard box enclosure, with the usual Synology logo on the sides:

If we look a little closer on one of the opposite sides, we will discover a sticker with the hardware characteristics along with the package contents:

Also here we will find a list of some of the of the product functions:

The inside contents are carefully sorted in different compartments:

Besides the power lead you have seen in the previous snapshot, we also have one Quick Installation Guide leaflet, along with the power brick and one LAN cable:

The power supply was manufactured by PGB and is rated on the output as 12V, 7.5A:

The NAS is also wrapped inside a foam material bag in order to avoid any damages during transport:

See something familiar? Indeed, Synology is still building NASes on the proven chassis model which we have first seen with our DS412+ review; this one is solid and adds very little weight to the product:
