Introduction & Specifications

Today we take a look at a product which is designed to protect your precious digital data from natural disaster. ioSafe builds products which can withstand high temperatures and are water proof (to an extent). They send us their latest and greatest 2-bay NAS device.

The ioSafe 214 is a 12kg heavy metal box which holds two 3.5" drives inside. ioSafe partnered with Synology to provide the NAS part of the product, in that regard the specifications of this device are almost identical to the Synology DS214 (CPU, memory, network connectivity, USB ports).

For all intents and purposes this device will function as a Synology DS214 device, if you don't get to see the physical device, you can't make the distinction. Of course there are a few specifications of the ioSafe 214 which surpass the Synology device:

Fire Protection Protects data from fire. Up to 1550°F, 30 minutes per ASTM E-119.
Flood Protection Protects data from flood. Fully submersed, fresh or salt water, 10 foot depth, 72 hours.
Theft Protection

Kensington® Security Slot. Optional Floor Mount / Padlock Kit.

The ioSafe enclosure can withstand up to ~843°C for 30 minutes; can be submersed 3 meter deep for 72 hours! Last but not least you can fix the ioSafe case with a Kensington cable.

We start of with a quick performance test of the ioSafe 214
