Gigabyte BRIX Pro Mini-PC Review

Others/All-in-one PC by leeghoofd @ 2014-04-22

Does size really matter? On some human levels it might, though a different trend has been observed in the PC market over the last year. Compact is the key word, featuring mITX sized motherboards and idem ditto enclosures. These compact PCs are playing a more and more important role in every manufacturers' lineup: Mini PCs, NUCs, they are all amongst us now. For most users the bundled power is more than plenty as the size maters the most. Nevertheless combining the raw power of a desktop setup inside a mini sized housing is a step in another direction. Gigabyte is having big success with their Brix boxes, time to step up one level. Today we are going to test one of these Gigabyte supercharged versions: the BRIX Pro.

2D Results

We compared the Gigabyte BRIX Pro versus several other processors we had in the database. Directly it is clear  how this tiny powerhouse performs. When going single or low multithreaded it can be as fast as the i5-4670K. When running heavy multithreaded applications the i7-4770R is in between the i7-4770 and the high end Haswell i7-4770K, more than plenty of calculating power under the hood for any application. Being it for gaming purposes, encoding,... whatever you will throw at the Gigabyte BRIX Pro, it will handle it with ease. The only drawback will be the heat it generates and yes or no if it will start to throttle, thus eventually hampering performance.

In the encoding X264HD as in the Cinebench test we see the same outcome. The Gigabyte BRIX Pro powered by the I7-4770R, really brings desktop performance to compact mini PCs.
