Aerocool DS Cube Computer Case Review

Cases & PSU/Cases by leeghoofd @ 2014-03-21

Taiwanese case manufacturer Aerocool is known for its affordable enclosures, however that doesn't necessarily imply the products are inferior in design nor quality. Sadly our last encounter with an Aerocool product was not that stellar. The full tower GT-S case was overpriced, especially looking at the build quality and cooling performance it delivered. This more humble looking DS cube could change our state of mind; featuring mATX and mITX compatibility, the provision to install an optical drive, being water cooling ready and even normal sized air coolers can be installed in this Dead Silence Cube. Could this DS be one of the main competitors in the HTPC or portable mini game PC market? Time to open the box to discover the Aerocool's Cube offering.

A Closer Look Contd.

Ventilation is provided by a front 200mm Fan, spinning at a mere 500rpm; the hot air is expelled by another slow spinning 120mm fan. Aerocool wants to make absolutely sure this case is quiet, though does that still mean it's up to the task to provide enough airflow for low operating temperatures ?

120mm Rear Fan specs:

  • Max rpm: 900rpm
  • Noise: rated at 21.5dBA
  • Airflow: 36.4CFM
  • Dimensions: 120 x 120 x 25mm

200mm Front Fan specs:

  • Max rpm: +/-500rpm
  • Noise: rated at 19.5dBA
  • Airflow: 35.4CFM
  • Dimensions: 200 x 200 x 20mm

Silent, check, but not impressive specifications though. Tiny cases require an optimum airflow, the above specifications make me wonder. Last but not least the absence of a front dust filter is a big miss in a modern case.

The I/O panel is positioned on the top part of the DS case. On one side we find the headphone and microphone audio jack, the reset and power button; on the other side two USB2.0 and two USB3.0 ports.

The four ventilated expansion shields are held into position by a slideable bracket. One can also spot two rubber grommet holes to route the water cooling hoses. The power supply is damped by four oversized rubber feet; luckily this one is provided with a removable dust filter.

The Dead silence case has a very elegant curved bottom design. The entire case rests on four thin rubber feet.
