CM Storm is Cooler Masters' hardware related gaming brand. Covering gaming gear from cases, input devices in the shape of gaming keyboards and mice, headsets, mouse pads and last but not least three different laptop coolers. The today reviewed SF-17 is the mid range notebook cooler variant. The little SF-15 brother, supports laptops up to 15.6 inch, while this SF-17 model has no issues to provide support for up to 19 inch sized laptops. The flagship SF-19 version is compatible with laptops from 19 inch and beyond. Time to unravel the refined design features of this mid range SF-17 model.

Unboxing

The CM Storm range logically follows in the footsteps of the splendid boxart of the normal Cooler Master lineup. Never change a winning formula !

The body of this gaming notebook cooler is mainly in plastic with rubber padding for a secure fixation of your notebook. Secondly it enhances the looks and stylishness of the Storm SF-17. Too bad this cooler is only available in black. Wouldn't a white or red plastic body and the black rubber padding and mesh grill give that extra bling to this gaming notebook cooler? The SF-17 is quite big, measuring plus minus 471 x 327 x 55mm. The weight is not shabby either at 1.89 kg.

The huge 180mm fan is of course the main center of attention. The fan speed can be manually adjusted between +/- 700-1200RPM via the stepless fan speed dial, this allowing each user to either find a good balance between noise and cooling performance, or just go flat out and allowing the fan to spin at full blast.

The SF-17 is powered via an USB cable hooked up to your notebook. Extra connectivity is provided via four extra USB2.0 ports. At the far right hand side you spot the small LED button to power on/off the front red LED lighting stripe. A red LED fan would have created a much nicer light effect then this stripe bar ever could manage.
