ASUSTOR AS-304T 4-bay NAS Server for Home Office Review

Storage/NAS by stefan @ 2013-09-30

ASUSTOR has recently released their AS-300T series represented with two NASes, one with 2 bays and the other with 4. These are powered by the latest Intel Atom CE5335 CPU at 1.6GHz, along with 1GB DDR3 of onboard memory and share the multimedia functions of their more expensive siblings, the AS-600T series. A remote can be also offered to navigate through the XBMC interface for extra cost, as an alternative to the USB mouse and keyboard.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

The 4-bay AS-304T NAS from ASUSTOR has arrived inside a medium-sized cardboard box, without a lot of drawings and logos on it as we have seen at other manufacturers; the plastic handle is really useful for manipulation:

On the sides we can see a similar arrangement as with the AS-604T:

The small sticker comes with information regarding package contents and some technical product specifications:

Right after opening the top layer, we will see some hints printed on the cardboard:

Protective foam has been used to keep the NAS chassis fixed inside the box during transport:

The bundle is placed in a separate plain cardboard box, which contains the LAN cable, a DVD with necessary applications, one power lead, a tiny guide and screws for using both 2.5’’ and 3.5’’ drives (the manufacturer did not include extra screws, so we have to be careful not to damage them):

The tiny guide is written in multiple languages and provides us the directions which we need to follow in order to continue the installation procedure:

When looking at the NAS from above, we won’t spot a lot of differences compared to its bigger brother, the AS-604T; they both have a metallic chassis with a gunmetal cover and a black plastic front:

On the front we have the area with status LEDs, but also the 4 trays which are easy removable and are provided with ventilation holes:
