Corsair Carbide AIR 540 Computer Case Review

Cases & PSU/Cases by leeghoofd @ 2013-07-11

During COMPUTEX 2013 CORSAIR introduced a few new enclosures, the Carbide 330R and the 540 AIR version. While the first is more a refinement of exiting designs, the new 540 AIR sports a revolutionary design for mass production cases. The concept behind this case is that the case is divided in two halves. One side houses the mainboard, graphics card and cooling devices. The second compartment leaves room for  HDD/SSDs, optical drives and the power supply. Thus the airflow is maximized for the hotter running components of your favourite hardware. The big custom made cube cases, in particular the UFO series from Mountain Mods are the foundation for these particular multi-compartment designs. However CORSAIR seems to have pulled it off to bring this design to the masses at a fraction of the cost.

A Closer Look Contd.

Storage-wise Corsair opted to reduce the number of HDD's, two hot swappable 3.5" bays in the right chamber. Two optical drives can be installed, but with this Carbide 450 Air in an upright position.

A total of four tool-free 2.5" SSD drive cages are located in the top part of the left chamber. The entire SSD unit can be easily removed or unclip the unused ones from the rest. Again one of them little nifty ideas CORSAIR keeps on integrating in their enclosures.

Inclusion of ventilated brackets, a solid cutout above the power supply and the inclusion of a fan grill in stead of case cutouts to maximise exhaust capacity.

Next to the hot swappable connection, we spot the movable power supply support. Power supplies up to 200mm length are compatible with the Carbide Air 540. The front panel supports two USB 3.0 ports, for the rest the usual power and reset button and the usual line in and out jacks. Too bad we only have 2 front USB 3.0 ports.
